As a lifelong activist, Karma was often frustrated by the strict, exacting rules of thangka painting, feeling it left little room for ordinary human emotions and experiences; anger, disgust, political urgency. Around 2008, he found in contemporary painting a way to reconcile his political convictions with his artistic practice. Freed from tradition, he turned to acrylic to confront what he couldn't as a thangka painter: rage, grief, longing. As he embarked on this new path, Karma and fellow Tibetan artists across disciplines created Tibetan Arts Fusion Nights — spontaneous late-night gatherings with writers, poets, and musicians, where art was made in direct response to the room's collective mood. This collection brings together his contemporary paintings that don't fall into any defined series.
